CHEMED celebrates National Health Center Week
August 11, 2011

CHEMED, recently celebrated National Health Center Week with a “Fire Safety and Burn Prevention” day on Thursday, August 11. The day began with a visit by Senator Sean. Following the Senator’s tour of the facility, Lakewood Mayor Menashe Miller presented Kean with an award in recognition of legislation that Kean sponsored designating August as Immunization Awareness Month in New Jersey. The official language of the joint resolution recognizes vaccines as being among “the most successful and cost-effective public health tools available for preventing disease and death; and notes that “most vaccine-preventable diseases have been reduced by 99% or more” due to high vaccination rates.

Later in the day about 200 children from the Lakewood Summertime Recreation program came to CHEMED to learn about fire safety and how to escape a burning building. The demonstration was given by former Fire Chief Jon Stillwell and another former Firefighter. Amid giving out hats and other types of prizes, they drove home important messages to help children develop a sense of how to relate to fire safety. Other representatives from the St. Barnabas Burn Center’s Fire Safety House also participated in the event. Apart from fire safety, kids learned about asthma from Horizon NJHealth. “It was a great day with lots of fun opportunities for the kids to learn,” said Dr. David Friedman, CEO, “this is what Community Health Centers are all about”.

The day was sponsored by Amerigroup, Horizon NJHealth and United Healthcare.

The second week of August each year is dedicated to recognizing the service and contributions of Community, Migrant, Homeless and Public Housing Health Centers in providing access to affordable, high quality, cost-effective health care to medically vulnerable and underserved people in the U.S. CHEMED, a Federally Qualified Health Center since January 2009, is dedicated to providing comprehensive health and medical services, including Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Behavioral Health and Dentistry. Women’s Health and Radiology departments will be opening in 2012. CHEMED is for everyone. Private patients are welcome along with uninsured and underinsured patients. Uninsured patients are seen on a sliding-fee scale, based on an ability to pay. To make an appointment, call 732-364-6666.
